November marks Hockey Fights Cancer Month across the NHL, an initiative where the entire hockey community comes together to inspire hope and courage for those who are living with, going through, and moving past cancer. Cancer is not a solo fight, it requires support. Our team at the NHL Alumni Association wants to echo this message. Whether it be a teammate, a loved one or a friend, we all have someone in our lives we fight for. As we look to honour the past, our team is reminded of Jimmy Valvano’s iconic motto, “Don’t give up. Don’t ever give up.” and Stuart Scott’s 2014 ESPYS speech:
“You beat cancer, by how you live, why you live, and in the manner in which you live. So live. Fight like hell. And when you get too tired to fight then lay down and rest and let somebody else fight for you.”
– Stuart Scott, 2014 ESPYS Jimmy V Award for Perseverance Recipient
These are truly words to live by. This Hockey Fights Cancer Month, let’s continue to embody both of these messages and fight for those battling today.
A very special thank you to the Arkells for sharing their music and message with us. Without them, this wouldn’t have been possible.
No matter how tough it may get, WE are fighting this battle together as ONE TEAM.
