The award honours his courage as a trailblazer of being one of the first European players to make an impact in the National Hockey League. Starting in 1975, Salming was named to six consecutive NHL All Star Teams and became the first European born and trained player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. The Award also memorializes B\u00f6rje\u2019s tremendous courage with his battle with ALS, the deadly neurological disease which sadly claimed his life in 2022.
